Cabinet Approves Spectrum Sharing Guidelines

  • Union Cabinet approved the spectrum sharing guidelines, which are expected to address the issue of mobile phone call drops and also optimise the use of radio frequency spectrum for telecom services
  • The new move will fulfill the government's commitment to improve spectral efficiency and quality of service, which is very essential to fulfill the dream of Digital India the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today gave its approval to the guidelines on spectrum sharing, arising from the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai)
  • Spectrum sharing will be restricted to sharing by only two licensees subject to the condition that there will be at least two independent networks provided in the same band
  • A licensee shall not be eligible to share its spectrum, if it has been established that it is in breach of terms and conditions of the licence, and the licensor has ordered for revocation or termination of its licence

Om Prakash Rawat appointed as the new Election Commissioner

  • President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday appointed Om Prakash Rawat as the Election Commissioner
  • Rawat is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1977 batch from Madhya Pradesh cadre
  • He had served as a Director in the Defence Ministry and also served as Principal Secretary to then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh to Babu Lal Gaur from 2004 and 2006
  • He also had served as Secretary at Department of Public Enterprises in the Ministry of Heavy Industries from 2012 till December 2014 when he retired

Hero Cycles Founder Om Prakash Munjal Dies 

  • Om Prakash Munjal, Co-Chairman of Hero Cycles Ltd and a leading industrialist died in Ludhiana 
  • He was 87
  • Om Prakash has received the Udyog Rattan Award from Punjab Government, Punjab Rattna award, The Samman Patra award towards for the contribution to exchequer of the Punjab state government and The Indira Gandhi National Unity award to recognize his social contribution
