New Governors of Bihar, Himachal Pradesh Appointed

  • Senior BJP leader Ram Nath Kovind and educationist Acharya Dev Vrat were appointed as Governors of Bihar and Himachal Pradesh
  • Kovind, who had been a two-time Rajya Sabha member between 1994 and 2006
  • West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi was holding additional charge of Bihar
  • Vrat has been working as Principal in the Gurukul since 1981
  • He has been a recipient of American Medal of Honor awarded by American Biographical Institutefor his  dedication in the field of social service
  • Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh was holding the additional charge of Himachal Pradesh

Pramerica buys Deutsche Bank’s mutual fund business in India

  • Pramerica has agreed to buy the asset management business of Deutsche Bank in India
  • The transaction is subject to approval by the Securities and Exchange Board of India and the Competition Commission of India
  • Deutsche AMC had assets of around 20,720 crore, while Pramerica managed assets worth 2,125 crore. Both fund houses are focussed on liquid and fixed income funds

Maharashtra govt declares Thane creek area as 'Flamingo Sanctuary'

  • The Maharashtra government has declared the area along Thane Creek as Flamingo Sanctuary, which will be spread over an area of 1,690 hectares, including 896 hectares of mangroves and 794 hectares of adjacent water body
  • The Sanctuary, which is named as the "Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary" will be Maharashtra's second Marine sanctuary, after Malvan
  • The Sanctuary will be located on the western bank of the Thane Creek, between the Airoli and Vashi bridges that connect Mumbai with Navi Mumbai
  • About 200 species of birds have been reported from this area, which include Globally Threatened Species like the Greater Spotted Eagle

Boost for 'Make in India': Foxconn to invest $5 billion in Maharashtra

  • Global electronic manufacturing company Foxconn, announced it will invest $5 billion over the next five years in Maharashtra, which has given the Taiwan-based company 1,500 acres of land for its plant
  • The facility in Maharashtra will focus on research and development as well as manufacturing
  • The company has chosen the state for being a financial centre, availability of quality talent and software-hardware integration facilities
  • Foxconn will be given 1,500 acres of land and Foxconn will create direct employment of 50,000 people through this MoU
