Mozambique President Visits Anand Agricultural University in Gujarat
- Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi, visited the Anand Agricultural University and sought information about new technologies being developed by the varsity in the field of agriculture
- He visited Educational Museum and plant tissue culture laboratory in the university premises to learn about latest technologies developed by the institution
- Also Mr. Filipe visited a farm used by the university's research centre, where varsity experts are doing experiments on groundnut and cotton crops
- The Mozambique President also visited 'Vidya Dairy', run by the students of Dairy Science College University Vice Chancellor RC Pathak provided guidance
Govt imposes 10% import duty on wheat
- Government imposed 10 percent import duty on wheat till March 2016 to curb shipments and liquidate poor quality grains lying in FCI godowns
- There is no import duty on wheat at present and private traders are importing the grains on lower global prices and lack of high-quality grains in the domestic markets
- Finance Minister Jaitley announced that the notification dated August 7 seeks to impose basic customs duty of 10 percent on wheat till March 31, 2016 under Section 159 of the Customs Act 1962
- FCI has procured 28.08 million tonnes of wheat this year, of which 26.62 million tonnes have been purchased under the relaxed quality norms because the crop got damaged due to unseasonal rains early this year
- Wheat production in India is the world's second biggest grower, declined to 90.78 million tonnes in 2014-15, as against the record production of 95.85 million tonnes during 2013-14
PM Modi launch first National Handloom Day at Chennai
- Prime Minister today announced August 7 as National Handloom Day to mark the 1905 Swadeshi movement
- The PM also called for increased use of handloom products, saying a 5% increase in consumption will increase revenues by 33% for the sector
- Three Kancheepuram weavers gets award on the launch by PM Modi, V.Sundararajan, K Jayanthi and V Palanivelu have won the award for at the first National Handloom Day
1905 Swadeshi movement
- The formal proclamation of the Swadeshi Movement was made in a meeting at the Calcutta Town hall
- The movement involved boycotting British products and the revival of domestic products and production processes
