Kochi to Become World Tourism Cities Federation Member

  • Kochi will soon become a member of Beijing-headquartered World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) Council
  • The Kerala government has accepted the invitation extended by WTCF to Kochi to be a member of the Council
  • The council is aimed at creating a global platform for cooperation and development of tourism
  • WTCF is a non-profit, non-governmental international organisation voluntarily formed by tourism cities and organisations of various countries and regions from around the world
  • The WTCF was formerly founded in Beijing on September I5, 2012, and is the first international tourism organization to take cities as its focus in the entire world

Telecom Minister launches mobile app ‘Disha’ to aid digital literacy in Bihar

  • Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has launched a mobile app in Bihar to aid digital literacy in the state
  • In order to offer digital literacy to tribal and Dalit women in Bihar, the minister awarded tablet computers to women who received training from common service centres in the state
  • Under the initiatives to improve digital connectivity in Bihar, BSNL will install 1,000 new base stations in the state and 184 of these will be located in Naxal-affected areas
  • All 8,354 gram panchayats of Bihar will be connected under Bharat Net in next three years

Poet, freedom fighter Kayyara Kinhanna Rai no more

  • Kannada poet and freedom fighter, 101-year-old Kayyara Kinhanna Rai died at his residence at Badiyadkka in Kasaragod district of Kerala on August 9
  • He was in the forefront of the movement to merge the Kannada-speaking region north of the Chandragiri river with Karnataka to fulfil its linguistic and development aspirations after the 1957 States reorganisation.
  • Mr. Rai founded Kasaragod Vileenekarana Kriya Samiti to fight for the cause

Nagasaki marks 70th anniversary of atomic bombing

  • Japan marked the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki that claimed more than 74,000 lives
  • The first atomic bomb in Hiroshima three days earlier killed 140,000 and over 90% of Hiroshima and over 40% of Nagasaki were destroyed
  • All the ageing survivors and the relatives of the victims observed a minute of silence at 11.02 am the moment the bomb from U.S destroyed the city
