Global satellite to be named after Abdul Kalam

  • A global satellite for earth observation and disaster risk reduction(DDR) proposed under the UN framework is to be dedicated to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as a tribute to the vision of the celebrated rocket scientist and former Indian president
  • The ‘GlobalSat for DRR’ is a UN-driven global initiative on sharing space technology for disaster risk reduction
  • Launch of this satellite was mooted at the third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held at Sendai in Japan
  • The concept was initiated by CANEUS (CANada-Europe-US-ASia is an organisation of space technologies) in cooperation with UN agencies including the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank

International Biodiesel day : August 10

  • Every year 10th day of August is celebrated as International Biodiesel day.
  • Scientist, Rudolf Diesel built a prime model of diesel engine with a 10 feet iron cylinder and flywheel at its base and was powered for the first time on August 10, 1893 in Augsburg, Germany. 
  • Thereafter this day is celebrated as International biodiesel day
  • Many people believe that had designed this engine in such a manner that it can run on peanut oil ( fact is that model designed by diesel could not run on peanut oil )
  • As a tribute to our environment every year this day many NGOs and local organizations around the world conduct various activities that are beneficial for the environment

Amitabh signs up as Maharashtra's Tiger Ambassador

  • Actor Amitabh Bachchan accepted the proposal by the Maharashtra government to work for tiger conservation
  • The government invited Mr. Bachchan and cricketer Sachin Tendulkkar inviting them to be the Tiger ambassador and create awareness and protection of tiger
  • Maharashtra has six tiger reserves including Melghat in Amaravati, Tadoba-Andheri in Mungatiwar, Pench and Nagzira-Navegan near Nagpur, Sahyadri and Koyna in Wardha district
  • The tiger population increased from 103 in 2006 to 169 in 2010 and in 2014 it is 190
