Srikumar Menon Appointed Ambassador to South Sudan

  • Srikumar Menon, senior IFS officer has been appointed as India's next Ambassador to South Sudan
  • South Sudan gained independence in 2011 after seceding from Sudan
  • South Sudan has some of the largest oil reserves in Africa and India's ONGC Videsh Ltd has made investment in the hydrocarbon sector of that country
  • He was the Indian Ambassador at Oman, Iran, Singapore, Poland, Netherland 

DRDO transfers technology to private Company for the first time

  • The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has approved a proposal by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for transfer of technology (ToT) for commercial production of its Lakshya pilotless target aircraft (PTA) to private sector defence manufacturer Larsen and Toubro (L&T)
  • Customers for Lakshya include foreign militaries, including those of Singapore, Malaysia and Israel
  • MoD put forward a condition that before selling the Lakshya abroad L&T should take permission from MoD

Muziris Heritage Project wins PATA award

  • Kerala Tourism has bagged this year’s Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Awards for its Muziris Heritage Project in the ‘Heritage Culture’ category
  • The award, sponsored by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), was bestowed on the Muziris Heritage Project for its conservational aspect, uniqueness and impact on local community
  • There were 269 entries from 83 organisations and individuals worldwide for this year’s award, the highest number since 2007
  • The awards will be presented on September 8, 2015 at PATA Travel Mart at Bangalore

Indian-origin doctor Shiv Pande receives honorary fellowship in UK

  • An Indian-origin doctor has received the honorary fellowship by one of the leading British Universities, University of Central Lancashire
  • The fellowship is given for contribution to the community as a general practitioner and medical educator
  • He was Born and educated in India, Pande obtained his MBBS and Ms (General Surgery) degrees in India before moving to the UK in 1971
  • After moving to UK He worked in cardio-thoracic surgery at London Chest Hospital, Broad Green Hospital and Fazakerley Hospital, Liverpool until 1974
