Over one-third population in rural India illiterate: Socio-economic census

  • Over one-third of Indian population living in rural areas is illiterate even after 68 years of independence, according to the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011
  • Around 64 percent of the rural Indian population is literate, the Census data showed
  • Rajasthan leads the pack of illiterate states with 47.58 percent
  • Madhya Pradesh with 44.19 percent of its people in rural areas being illiterate
  • Bihar is at the third place with 43.85 percent and followed by newly carved state Telangana with 40.42 percent population belonging to this category
  • The most literate state of Kerala has only 11.38 percent population falling under the illiterate category

Guinness Book Recognises Madhya Pradesh's World Record in Washing Hands

  • The Guinness Book of World Records has recognised a record created in Madhya Pradesh on 'World Hand washing Day' on October 15, 2014
  • A certificate recognising the same will be handed over to the state at a function, an official of the Madhya Pradesh Public Relation Department
  • The official website of Guinness Book, 12,76,425 students created a new world record by washing their hands simultaneously at programmes held by panchayats and rural development departments on the World Hand washing Day at 13,196 different locations across 51 districts in Madhya Pradesh
  • The record was held jointly by Argentina, Peru and Mexico earlier after 7,40,870 people washed their hands simultaneously at different locations on October 14, 2011

Nationwide Mobile Number Portability goes live

  • The countrywide Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has become a reality today which means mobile subscribers can now keep their existing mobile phone numbers even while shifting between states and circles
  • The move lays the first stone for the government's 'One nation, One number' plan and is sure to benefit millions of people across the country

Former Chief Justice of India YK Sabharwal passes away

  • Former Chief Justice of India YK Sabharwal passed away in New Delhi on Saturday evening
  • Justice Sabharwal was CJI from 1 November 2005 to 13 January, 2007
  • He was an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 1986 and became its permanent judge in April 1987
  • From Delhi High Court, he went to Bombay High Court as chief justice before being appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on 28 January, 2001
  • Justice Sabharwal delivered several important judgements including the verdict in January 2006, that held the dissolution of Bihar Assembly as illegal and unconstitutional
