India's population at 5pm today - 127,42,39,769

  • India on Saturday recorded a population of 127,42,39,769,  and could make the country the most populous in the world by 2050
  • The current population growth  is at the rate of 1.6 per cent a year and it will surpass china by 2050
  • July 11 World Population Day, the population of India is  17.25 per cent of the global population, as per Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh or National Population Stabilization Fund (NPSF)
  • According to data from NPSF, the total fertility rate (TFR) in India has seen a decline and stood at 2.3 in 2013 although the decline is not consistent
  • The population of India, at 1.21 billion as per the 2011 Census, is almost equal to the combined population of USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Japan put together

Hollywood actor Umer Sharif passed away

  • Famous Hollywood actor Umer Sharif passed away at the age of 83
  • He is famous for his title role as Doctor Zhivago in the Oscar-winning film
  • Sharif was one of the few Arab actors who succeed to make it to Hollywood. 
  • He won international fame and an Oscar-nomination for best supporting actor for his role in the 1962 film “Lawrence of Arabia” with Peter O’Toole.
  • Umer Sharif raised as a Roman Catholic but later converted to Islam and married Hamama in 1955, taking on his new name

Serena Williams wins 6th Wimbledon title

  • Serena Williams won a sixth Wimbledon title by beating  Garbine Muguruzaid
  • She defeated Garbine Muguruza of Spain by 6-4, 6-4 score
  • She is the world No. 1 in women's singles in Tennis
  • She also made history by becoming the oldest player to win a Grand Slam in the Open era
  • Williams now holds all four majors at the same time having also won the U.S., Australian and French Open titles

Sunita Williams : Indian-American Astronaut Selected in NASA's First Commercial Crew

  • Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams is among four astronauts who have been selected by NASA for commercial flights to the International Space Station
  • Robert Behnken, Eric Boe and Douglas Hurley were the other three for the NASA mission.
  • Williams, a US Navy captain, received her commission in the Navy in May 1987 and became a helicopter pilot, logging more than 3,000 flight hours in more than 30 different aircraft
  • NASA selected Sunita Williams for the astronaut program in 1998
  • She spent a total of 322 days in space and currently holds the record for total cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut

Wimbledon 2015: Sania Mirza’s-Martina Hingis Won

  • Sania Mirza-Martina Hingis won their first Wimbledon women’s doubles title together
  • This is the first time for Sania won the women's Wimbledon doubles
  • They won the match by beating Makarova-Vesnina 5-7 7-6 7-5 final at the Centre Court in London
  • Sania won Australian Open (2009) and French Open (2012) and Hingis won the Wimbledon doubles with Helena Sukova in 1996 and Jana Novotna in 1998
