Cuba Becomes First Ever Country To Eliminate Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV

  • Cuba has again prove the outstanding health care system becoming the first country ever to receive World Health Organization (WHO) validation that it has eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis
  • For getting the validation of WHO the country needs to demonstrate that it has seen less than 50 infections from this route of transmission per 100,000 live births for at least one year
  • Cuba has surpassed these requirements: In 2013, only two babies were born with HIV and just five with syphilis
  • According to the WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan eliminating transmission of a virus is one of the greatest public health achievements possible

  • Worldwide, there are 16 million women living with HIV, and each year 1.4 million of them will become pregnant
  • The risk of passing the virus to the child can be reduce to 1%  if anti-HIV drugs are provided to the mother
  • But if anti-HIV drugs are not provided then the possibility for the transmission of virus is 45%
  • Infection at the time of delivery is also a major cause of the virus transmission

Greece becomes first developed nation to default on IMF debt

  • Greece becomes the first developed economy to default on a loan with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
  • The International Monetary Fund didn't receive the €1.6 billion payment from Athens that was due by the end of June 30
  • Greek government had asked European partners for a two-year aid package to cover its financing needs
  • The IMF cannot issue new loans to a country that is in arrears
