Mizoram celebrated 29th anniversary of signing of Mizo Accord 

  • The 29th anniversary of signing of the historic Mizo Accord — between the Centre and Mizo National Front (MNF) on June 30, 1986 — was celebrated on 30-june-2015 all over Mizoram
  • MNF held formal celebrations at 14 different towns across the state with senior party leaders
  • Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) also held a minute of silence to mourn all those who lost their lives during the insurgency years
       The Fact
  • The MNF led by late Laldenga declared independence from the Indian Union on March 1, 1966 and the armed insurrection made Mizoram into violence and chaos for about 20 years
  • Peace returned with signing of the Mizo Accord on the night of June 30, 1986 between the then Union Home Secretary R D Pradhan on behalf of the government of India, the then MNF president Laldenga on behalf of the 'Mizoram government-in-exile' and the then Mizoram Chief Secretary Lakhama on behalf of the Mizoram government

Solar-powered plane takes off from Japan for trans-Pacific crossing

  • Solar-powered plane took off from Japan on the seventh leg of its journey round the world
  • The trip set above the trans-Pacific crossing expected to be the toughest part of the trip
  • Its departure was postponed several times due to poor weather, once last week with the plane - which bears 17,000 solar cells across its wingspan - on standby at the end of a runway
  • Overall, the trip was expected to span approximately 25 flight days broken up into 12 legs at speeds between 50 and 100 kph

Literacy rate at 71% in rural India, 86% in urban: Survey

  • Literacy rate in rural areas is at 71% and 86% in urban areas
  • While considering the age group of seven years and above, male literacy rate was higher than the female literacy rate
  • Among the age group of seven year and above, the male literacy rate was at 83 per cent and the female literacy rate is 67 per cent
  • The survey covered entire country with samples taken from 36,479 households in rural areas and 29,447 in urban areas from 4,577 villages and 3,720 urban blocks

Abhijeet Gupta wins Commonwealth Chess Championship

  • Abhijeet Gupta won the 2015 Commonwealth Chess Championship after settling for a quick draw with Arghyadip Das
  • He was the former world junior Champion
  • The 2015 Commonwealth Chess Championship was held from 22-30th June at Hotel Park Plaza, Shahdara, New Delhi
  • The event has attracted 298 participants from 11 federations, including 23 Grandmasters and 30 International Masters

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu Inaugurates Integrated Security System in Mumbai

  • Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the Integrated Security System (ISS) installed at four railway stations-CST, Dadar, Kurla and LTT
  • The Security System will monitor passenger activities through a network of CCTV cameras at six railway stations comprising CST, Dadar, Kurla, LTT Kalyan and Thane
  • The total cost of the installation o the Security System is 21.72 crore Rupees
  • Minister also inaugurated the modified foot over bridge (FOB) to facilitate passenger movement at Diva

Matti Makkonen, Father of SMS passes away

  • Matti Makkonen, known as the father of short message service (SMS), passed away
  • The idea for  SMS was developped in 1984, while working as a civil servant, over a pizza at a telecoms conference in Copenhagen
  • He never received any money from the invention, never applying for a patent
  • Always pointing out that he did not invent the technology single-handedly, he saw SMS as a “joint effort” between many people, but much of the initial credit belongs to him
