Veteran journalist Praful Bidwai dies in Amsterdam

  • Praful Bidwai a veterain journalist  has died on 23 June 2015 during a visit to the Netherlands
  • Bidwai was attending a conference in Amsterdam who is an anti nuclear activist
  • He was a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers, besides being a leading anti-nuclear activist
  • He wrote a number of books, including the ‘1999 New Nukes: India, Pakistan and Global Nuclear Disarmament'
  • He served as a member of the Indian Council for Social Science Research, the Central Advisory Board on Education, and the National Book Trust

Blue Mormon: state butterfly of Maharashtra

  • Government of Maharashtra declared Blue Mormon as the state butterfly
  • It has velvet, black wings with bright blue spots and mainly seen at Western Ghats of Maharashtra, South India and coastal belts of the country
  • State Wildlife Board chaired by finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar taken the decision
  • Indian Giant Squirrel (Shekru) as its state animal, Yellow Footed Green Pigeon (Hariyal) as state bird, mango as state tree, and Lagerststroemia (Jarul) as state flower

Steffi Graf appointed as Kerala’s Ayurveda brand ambassador

  • Germany tennis legend Steffi Gra appointed as Kerala’s Ayurveda system of healthcare
  • The decision was taken by the cabinet and Kerala tourism department was given sanction to sign an agreement with Graf
  • Steffi Graf is the only player to win 3 grand slams in a calendar year 5 times (1988, 1989, 1993, 1995 and 1996)
  • And also Graf was ranked World No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for a record 377 total weeks

Mother Teresa's successor Sister Nirmal Died

  • The successor of Mother Teresa Sister Nirmala Joshi died at the age of 81
  • On March 13, 1997, six months before Mother Teresa's death, Nirmala Joshi was selected the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity
  • She expanded the organisation's reach to 134 countries by opening centres in nations such as Afghanistan, Israel and Thailand
  • Sister Mary Prema was elected to succeed her
