SOUTH INDIAN EMPIRE

The history of the southern part of India covers a span of over four thousand years during which the region saw the rise and fall of a number of dynasties and empires. The period of known history of the region begins with the Iron age (1200 BCE to 24 BCE) period until the 14th century CE.The major rulers or Dynasties of South Indian was:


(i) Satavahana (ii) Chola (iii) Chalukya (iv) Pallava (v) Rashtrakuta (vi) Kakatiya (vii) Hoysala

Satavahana Dynasty


Satavahana established their Kingdom in the Deccan after the decline of Maurya. They are also known as Andhras, Satakarnis, Salivahanas.. There are many controversies between the historians on the origin of Satavahana Dynasty. Most of the historians believe that they are origin from Bellari District of Karnataka in the 3rd century BC. And after the decline of Maurya they expanded the kingdom toward Maharashtra.


Simuka
  • He was the founder of the Satavahana Dynasty 
  • Large number of coins were unearthed from the period of Simuka ruler 
  • He built Buddhist and Jain Temple 
  • He was killed by his brother Kanha 
  • Kanha ruled the dynasty for 18 years 
Satakarni I 
  • He was the successor of Kanha. 
  • He was the powerful ruler in the maratha 
  • His queen was Naganika and the sculpture Nanaghat bear the figures of Satakarni and Naganika 
  • He conquered Malwa, Anupa, vidharbha and expended his kingdom 
Satakarni II
  • He was the sixth king and successo rof Lambodhara 
  • He captured Malwa 
  • After his period the Satavahana Dynasty lost their power and becomes small kingdom

Other Satavahana Rulers

Hala : 

17 th King of Satavahana He wrote sattasi. Their kingdom was in east Deccan. Shaka attacked the Satavahana and captured central Deccan in his period.

GoutamiPutra Satavahana : 

He was also a great Emperor in the period. He defeated Nahapana the shaka ruler and captured central Deccan.He destroy the Saka emperor

Vashishtiputra Pulamayi II :

He was the successor of Goutamiputra. He conquered Bellary and extended the kingdom to south.

Yajna Sri Satakarni : 

He was the last ruler in the Dynasty. He conquered many places in the Saka Kingdom
