Satellite-based navigation system launched

  • Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju launched the GPS-Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system, which will offer seamless navigation to the aviation industry
  • The system was developed at a rate of 774 crore and take 15 years.
  • India is the fourth country to offer space-based satellite navigation services to the aviation sector
  • The system gives the coverage areas of the European Union’s European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) and Japan’s Multi-functional Satellite Augmentation System (MSAS)
  • GAGAN will provide augmentation service for the GPS over the country, the Bay of Bengal, South East Asia and Middle East and up to Africa
  • The system would be available for the member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)

Lt Gen Man Mohan Singh Rai to be next Vice-Chief of Army

  • Lt Gen Man Mohan Singh Rai has been appointed as the next Vice-Chief of the Indian Army
  • He was the Eastern Army command and will take incharge of the new post after Lt Gen Philip Campose
  • Rai is from the Corps of Engineers and is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla
  • He was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, on December 15, 1976

China sets up world's largest cancer registry 

  • China has set up the world's largest cancer registry system 
  • Based on the new system developed cover over 300 million people in a bid to fight the deadly disease with evidence-based and more-targeted intervention programmes
  • According to the survey three million people develop cancer each year in China, and the registry is expected to expand to include 40 per cent of the nation's population of 1.36 billion by 2020 
  • A cancer registry is a systematic collection of data about cancer and tumor diseases. Cancer registry records complete summary of patient history, diagnosis, treatment and status of every cancer patient
