- The 2nd Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit, was hosted by India in Jaipur on 21 August 2015.
- This was inagurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- The objective of summit is to strengthen trade and bilateral relations between India and the Pacific countries.
- The island nations which taking part in the FIPIC summit include Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Nauru, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Niue, Palau, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea
Ranil Wickremesinghe sworn in Sri Lanka PM
- United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was on Friday sworn in as Prime Minister for the fourth time
- President Maithripala Sirisena administered oath of office to Mr. Wickremesinghe at a brief ceremony attended by leaders of various parties including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa
- On the occasion, general secretaries of the UNP and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Kabir Hashim and Duminda Dissanayake, signed an agreement to form a national government
- Mr. Wickremesinghe, who has been a Member of Parliament since 1977, became the prime minister for the first time in May 1993 after the then incumbent D.B. Wijetunga was made President, subsequent to the assassination of R. Premadasa
- In 2001, he was elected as the Prime Minister for the second time after the United National Front got a majority of seats in the parliamentary elections
Govt launches education loan portal for students
- The government launched a website, vidyalakshmi.co.in, for students seeking educational loan and five banks including SBI, IDBI Bank and Bank of India have integrated their system with the portal.
- "Vidya Lakshmi (www.vidyalakshmi.co.in) was launched on the occasion of Independence Day i.e. 15th August, 2015 for the benefit of students seeking educational loans,"
- The portal has been developed and maintained by NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited (NSDL e-Gov) under the guidance of Department of Financial Services in the Finance Ministry, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Indian Banks Association (IBA)
