West Bengal Government amends Land Reform Bill

  • West Bengal government passed the Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill, 2014 relaxing the cap on private land holding
  • The state government has also been lenient with industrialists who have plans to sit idle with their land
  • Based on the previous law industrialists were allowed to keep the allotted land unused under for a maximum period of three years, but under the new law they will be allowed to keep it for five years
  • Few amendments made some exemptions earlier and the areas of exemption included were livestock breeding farm, poultry farm, dairy, industrial park, or industrial hub or industrial estate etc
  • On the latest amendments, the areas which were added include fishery, transportation or terminal, logistic hub, township, financial hub, logistic hub, warehousing, educational and medical institutions, oil and gas products piped transportation, and mining and allied activities

Sangakkara to quit during India series 

  • Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara will quit international cricket during the test series against India in August, the island nation's most prolific batsman said on Saturday
  • He wanted to quit all formats of the game after Sri Lanka's World Cup campaign this year but promised to be available for the back-to-back home series against Pakistan and India
  • Sangakkara made his international debut in 2000 and is currently playing his 132nd test against Pakistan, having amassed 12,305 runs at an average of over 58 and including 38 centuries
  • He also made 20 stumpings and 179 catches in tests

  • Satnam Singh Bhamara became the first Indian to be drafted by a NBA team
  • He created history at 9.20 IST in Brooklyn, New York after he was picked by the Texas franchise






  • The 19 year-old 7 foot 2 incher from Ballo Ke village in Punjab
  • Satnam was in a training program in US since Septmber 2010 as a part of his scholarship program between IMG and Reliance
