Greece's caretaker government sworn in with first female prime minister

  • Greece’s new caretaker government was sworn in on Friday as the country prepares early elections next month, the third time Greeks will go to the polls this year
  • Vassiliki Thanou, a top judge and the country’s first female prime minister, will lead the country until the election, which is expected to take place on 20 September
  • Her predecessor, Alexis Tsipras, following a rebellion by members of his leftwing Syriza party who objected to the conditions of Greece’s third international bailout
  • The new cabinet may be in power for less than a month, but it will have to oversee the implementation of several austerity measures on which the new bailout depends
  • Tsipras, who resigned barely seven months into his four-year term, has said he needed a stronger mandate to implement the tough austerity measures accompanying the €86bn (£63bn) bailout and the first major opinion poll since the election was called, published in the left-leaning Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper on Friday, found little support for his move
  • 64% said Tsipras was wrong to call the vote, compared with 24% who supported the decision. The remainder took no position or did not reply

Aurangzeb Road Renamed After APJ Abdul Kalam, Arvind Kejriwal Tweets 'Congrats'

  • One of Delhi's most elite addresses, Aurangzeb Road, will be renamed after former president APJ Abdul Kalam
  • The decision was taken by the civic body in charge of central Delhi, after an all-clear from the union home ministry
  • The BJP's Mahesh Girri wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month suggesting that Aurangzeb Road should be named after Dr Kalam
  • In 2014, a prominent Sikh body in Delhi had petitioned PM Modi to change the name of Aurangzeb Road to Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Road
  • Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal Emperor, ruled over most of the Indian subcontinent in the 17th century

Centre to commemorate 50th anniversary of 1965 war

  • 50th anniversary of 1965 India-Pakistan war was observed across the country on 28 August 2015.
  • The famous “Jai Jawan, Jai Kissan” slogan of the then prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri will be used for the celebrations to counter the Opposition parties’ bid to cash in on simmering resentment among farmers and retired soldiers
  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has bowed to all brave soldiers who fought for the Motherland, on the 50th anniversary of 1965 war
  • The courage and bravery of our Armed Forces is very inspiring and they triumphed over every obstacle and protected India's unity and integrity

Indian scientist Dr Modadugu Vijay Gupta awarded first Sunhak Peace Prize

  • Indian agriculture scientist Dr Modadugu Vijay Gupta, who has done pioneering work in aquaculture in India, Bangladesh and several Southeast Asian countries, was awarded the first Sunhak Peace Prize which he shared with the President of Kiribati Islands 
  • Tong, 63, the head of the Pacific Ocean island nation which is facing dire prospects of being engulfed by rising sea waters by 2050, was chosen for the award for his dogged fight to end the carbon emissions which are spelling doom for small island nations
  • Starting his career as a scientist in Indian Council Agriculture Research over three decades ago in Kolkata, Gupta worked in Laos, Vietnam, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Thailand pursuing his belief that the aqua technology which can provide food security and improve livelyhoods of rural poor 
  • He served as the Assistant Director General at WorldFish, an international fisheries research institute under the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) based in Penang, Malaysia
