Poor sanitation responsible for unfavorable pregnancy outcomes in India: New Study
- It is poor sanitation practices like open defecation, in pregnant women that leads to adverse outcomes in India, particularly two rural areas of Odisha state, claims a new research
- Bijaya K Padhi from the Asian Institute of Public Health Selected 670 women during the first three month of their pregnancy, recorded information about toilet access and sanitation practices for each woman at enrollment, and followed them through pregnancy until birth
Observations
- Nearly two-third of the women practiced open defecation, and a quarter experienced an adverse pregnancy outcome, most commonly a preterm birth and/or having a baby with low birth weight
- According to the study the context of maternal and child prevention research, sanitation was an important dimension of women's health and distinct from social class and caste

India, U.S. to sign tax pact
- India and the United States signed a tax information sharing agreement on Thursday, under a new U.S. law meant to combat offshore tax dodging by Americans
- Washington has so far signed pacts covering more than 80 tax jurisdictions to implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act(FATCA) 2010
- The tax pact will help India to gain Washington's support to bring back illegal funds deposited by Indians in foreign tax havens and boost revenues
- Thus banks, mutual funds, insurance, pension and stock-broking firms will report their American client details to the tax department for sharing with the U.S
