- January 1 : Latvia officially adopts the Euro as its currency and becomes the 18th member of the Eurozone.

- January 10 : Google allows users to communicate with each other on Google Plus even if they are not friends.
- January 13 : China conducts the test of a new hypersonic missile vehicle, dubbed the "WU-14", which has top speeds of Mach 8 to Mach 12. The weapon was launched on an ICBM.
