India, Brazil Decide to Explore Ways to Boost Cooperation

  • India and Brazil have decided to boost cooperation in diverse areas of defence, cyber security, trade and commerce
  • Both the nations agreed to coordinate their efforts within G-4 for UN Security Council reform and decided to work together in BASIC for Climate Change
  • The areas of cooperation included inter alia trade and commerce, agriculture, environment, peaceful uses of nuclear energy, space, defence, traditional medicine, education, culture, and cyber security

Unesco named Conakry as World Book Capital for 2017

  • Unesco on Tuesday announced that Conakry, the capital of Guinea in west Africa will be the World Book Capital for 2017
  • The Decision was based on the quality and diversity of itys programme, focus on community involvement and well structured budget and clear development goals
  • The strong investment of the Republic of Guinea in promoting books and literacy bears witness to a clear vision of culture and education as drivers of development and recovery

State governments have power to free convicts: SC

  • Supreme Court allowed state governments to exercise their power of remission to free convicts if such cases are not investigated by CBI or other central agencies
  • A Constitution Bench led by Chief Justice H L Dattu modified the court’s order of July 2014 by which the states were restrained from exercising power of remission
  • The special bench also added that this power would not be exercised only in cases probed by the central agencies or where there is a specific order by a court not to grant remission
  • The Bench is hearing a petition by the Centre which has challenged the Tamil Nadu government’s power to free convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case
