UPSC encourages women to apply for civil services exam for gender balance


  • The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has encouraged women candidates to apply for the civil services examination for gender balance. 
  • Women were the top slots in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 civil services examinations and men in the 2013 examination
  • This year, the preliminary examination will be held on August 23 in 71 centres at about 3,000 venues.

Nirbhay Sharma, new Governor of Mizoram

  • Lt General (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma  sworn-in as the Governor of Mizoram at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan
  • Justice T Vaiphei, judge of the Gauhati High Court, administered the oath of office to General Sharma
  • He is the eighth Governor of Mizoram after the then state Governor Vakkom Purushothaman 

ANZ Bank to open 2 India branches by early 2016


  • Australia and New Zealand Banking group (ANZ)  will open its first rural branch in Bengaluru by early next yea
  • Currently, the bank has one branch in Mumbai, which was opened in 2011. Earlier, it owned British bank Grindlays before selling it to Standard Chartered in 2000
  • Government approved FDI worth 280 Crore
  • Union Government on 25 May 2015 approved 21 proposals of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) worth 280 crore rupees. 
  • These were based on recommendations of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).
