PM Narendra Modi honours legendary freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu from North-East

  • In continuation with the government’s emphasis to build bridge with the North-East, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed all his ministers to visit North-East at least twice every year and take up issues related to their ministries
  • This was revealed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi at the inaugural function of the birth centenary celebrations of Rani Gaidinliu, a legendary freedom fighter from Nagaland
  • The event was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, in the presence of Finance Minister Arun Jaitely, Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma, DONER Minister Jitendra Singh, Nagaland and Assam Governor PB Acharya, Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and Nagaland CM TR Zeliang
  • PM also issued commemorative coin of hundred rupees and circulation coin of five rupees on Rani Gaidinliu

India, Australia ink MoU to deepen education ties

  • Deepening cooperation in the field of education, India and Australia agreed on a joint financial commitment of up to AUS$ one million and signed an MoU to strengthen existing partnerships
  • The MoU would intensify existing partnerships in higher education and research, including technical and professional education, schools, vocational education and training
  • The agreement, which will also open up new and innovative areas of cooperation, was signed between HRD Minister Smriti Irani and the Australian Minister for Education and Training Christopher Pyne
  • The MoU was approved by Union Cabinet last week

Retd judge M L Tahaliyani sworn in as Maharashtra Lokayukta

  • Justice (Retd) M L Tahaliyani was sworn in as the new Maharashtra Lokayukta during a function at Raj Bhavan’s Darbar Hall where Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao administered him oath
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Education Minister Vinod Tawde and judges of the Bombay High Court also attended the swearing-in ceremony, along with members of Tahaliyani’s family, a statement from the Maharashtra
  • Tahaliyani succeeds Justice (retd) P B Gaikwad, whose term as Maharashtra Lokayukta ended on July 1, 2014
  • Tahaliyani was born in the Gondia district and studied law in Nagpur before being appointed as the metropolitan magistrate in 1987 at the Bandra Metropolitan Court
