SSB awarded for role in preventing animal smuggling to Nepal

  • The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), paramilitary force along Indo-Nepal border, got a 'leadership in animal welfare award' for its pro-active measures to prevent thousands of animals from going to Nepal for the Gadhimai festival which is known for animal (buffaloes, goats and cows) sacrifice in huge number as part of a religious ritual
  • Nearly 70% of the total nearly 400,000 animals sacrificed which are illegally brought from bordering Indian states of Bihar, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh
  • Union women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi presented this leadership award to the SSB for prohibiting illegal smuggling of animals to Nepal
  • Supreme Court order that had in November last year banned illegal movement of animals across Indo-Nepal border during the festival and SSB effectively prevent the illegal smuggling of animals
  • Gadhimai festival is held every five years in the Bara district of Nepal

Court Relaxes Adoption Norms for Foreigners Married to Indians

  • The Bombay High Court today held that couples where one of the parents is an Indian national and are adopting a child in India would be termed as 'in-country', reducing the formalities to be followed by them
  • Justices V M Kanade and B P Colabawala was hearing a petition filed by an American woman married to an Indian seeking to adopt a six-year-old boy with special needs who has been in her foster care
  • The bench permitted he woman to file an application for adoption of the boy before a magistrate court
  • The rule will be a new way for adopting child from India
